Flying From Edmonton: How Not to Overpay for Mexico and Costa Rica
Edmonton has no direct flights to most Mexican beach resorts or to Costa Rica — and that one fact shapes the whole price of your trip. Here is how to play it smart.
Mexico (Riviera Maya, Cancun airport): the usual route from Edmonton is one stop, most often via Calgary or another Canadian hub. WestJet and other carriers run frequent service, so prices stay competitive — especially if you book early or catch a seat sale.
Costa Rica (Liberia airport): there are no direct flights from Edmonton to Liberia at all. The standard routing is one stop via Calgary — WestJet flies direct from Calgary to Liberia year-round, with about a 1 hour 40 minute layover and about 9 hours total travel from Edmonton.
Package vs separate booking: a vacation package bundles flight, hotel, and transfer — sometimes cheaper, sometimes not. Always compare the package price against booking the flight and the hotel separately. For Costa Rica, remember the transfer is usually not included: budget about $35–60 per vehicle each way from Liberia airport.
Three rules that save money
- Book flights early for peak winter, and watch for sales in late November (Black Friday) and Boxing Day.
- Compare the total trip cost, not just the flight — a cheap flight with an expensive hotel is not a deal.
- If a Calgary departure is much cheaper, weigh the drive to Calgary against the saving — for a family of four, it often pays off.
The bottom line: from Edmonton, the flight is the part of the trip where smart routing saves the most. Spend an hour comparing, and the saving can cover your excursions.
