Mexico vs Costa Rica: Where Is a Family Holiday Cheaper?
Two of the most popular all-inclusive destinations for Canadian families — Mexico's Riviera Maya and Costa Rica's Pacific coast. Both are beautiful. But the prices are not the same, and the difference is bigger than most people expect.
Mexico, Riviera Maya (Riu Tequila, Playacar): 14 nights for a family of 4 cost C$3,200, hotel only — about C$229 per night for the whole family. Flights from Canada are frequent, competition is high, and that keeps prices down.
Costa Rica (Riu Guanacaste, Playa Matapalo): 7 nights for a family of 4 cost about C$3,790 in late October 2027 (RIU Class rate, taxes included) — roughly C$541 per night. The cheapest week of the year, mid-September, is about C$3,465. Peak winter weeks run to about C$7,400.
Why the gap? Mexico's Riviera Maya has far more resorts and far more flights, so the market is more competitive. Costa Rica's Guanacaste coast has fewer all-inclusive resorts, and getting there from Edmonton means a connection via Calgary — there are no direct flights to Liberia.
What Costa Rica gives you for the premium: wilder nature, monkeys on the beach, drier and cooler evenings in green season, and a trip that doubles as a scouting visit if you ever dream of living there.
The honest verdict: if the budget is the priority, Mexico wins by a wide margin. If you want Costa Rica, travel in green season (May or September–October) — the same room costs 30–40% less than in peak winter.
