RIU Class: How to Pay With Points and Not Lose Money
RIU Class is RIU's free loyalty program, and its points are real money: 10 points = $1 off a future stay. But there's a catch most people learn the hard way — how much you can redeem depends on your tier.
The tiers: Pre-Classic (free, from the moment you sign up), Classic (after your first completed stay), Gold (30 nights in 24 months, points earned x2), Diamond (60 nights, points earned x3). Every tier also gets a member rate of up to 10% off.
The redemption caps: Pre-Classic members can cover only 10% of a booking with points. Classic members can cover 15%. Gold and Diamond members can cover 100%.
Here's a real example. Booking a stay at Riu Tequila with 6,000 points ($600) in the account, only 3,500 points ($350) were actually deducted — because the booking was made as a Pre-Classic member and the 10% cap kicked in. The remaining 2,500 points ($250) were not lost: points only expire after 4 years of inactivity.
The smart move: check your tier before you book. After one completed stay you become Classic and the cap rises to 15%. And if you're close to Gold — 30 nights in 24 months — one more family trip can unlock 100% redemption and double points on everything after.
One more tip: a 7-night family trip, like a week at Riu Guanacaste, is often exactly what pushes you over the Gold line. Book the trip first, earn Gold from it, and redeem big on the next one.
Points are free money — just make sure the cap doesn't eat them.
