What Is Actually Included in All-Inclusive?

All-inclusive sounds simple: one price, everything included. In reality, "everything" has limits — and knowing them before you book saves you money and disappointment.

What is almost always included: the room, all meals at the buffet and usually at a la carte restaurants, drinks including alcohol (local brands; premium brands often cost extra), daytime activities like pools, beach access, and non-motorized water sports, and evening shows and entertainment.

What is almost never included: airport transfers, flights, spa treatments, motorized water sports, premium wine and spirits, off-site excursions, and the local visitor tax (in Quintana Roo, Mexico, it is Visitax: 293 MXN per person).

Three things to check before you book

The golden rule: all-inclusive covers your stay, your food, and your fun at the resort. Everything that takes you outside the resort — transfers, tours, taxes — is usually on you. Budget for it separately, and the final price will never surprise you.
